work place

1.a) How many people work at Google in Santa Monica?
Light Rail Now! deposits a story in our laps that makes us weep. Google, overlords of the Internets, have chosen to locate a 600 person office to Phoenix, Arizona. Google execs sited a variety of factors including Phoenix's labor costs, lack of natural disasters (borrr-ing), and public transportation system as the reason for their location to the water thirsty, sprawling, sunbelt city.

In regard to the location decision, "Which factors played a bigger role is hard to say" comments the Arizona Republic (30 Oct. 2005), citing a variety of factors like lower labor costs; lower state income-tax bills; excellent local educational resources (such as Arizona State Unversity (bah! -ed.)); and a "relatively disaster-free environment, a far cry from the earthquake-prone areas of northern and Southern California."
But, as the Republic reports on November 3rd, Google does indeed have an office in the southland. In fact, it's in Santa Monica, which has been touting the recent arrival of Google competitor Yahoo! to the city. Embarassingly enough, Google has escaped the notice of Santa Monica officials.

Google has been so low-profile in the Southern California beach community of Santa Monica that its economic development manager said she didn't even know the company was in town. Instead, city officials and the Chamber of Commerce have raved about Google's rival, Yahoo, expanding there.

Santa Monica's planning director also needed assistance from a reporter (who used a Google search) to tell him where Google's engineering office was located, even though the city has just 8.3 square miles.

"I know nothing about how Google came in," said Miriam Mack, Santa Monica's economic development manager.

You can't see us but we're cringing.

b) What do people do for fun while they are at work at Google?
Found: geeks on the beach.

Google Inc. has spread out like a beach towel in Santa Monica. What started in 2003 with a few dozen employees has grown into the company's fourth-largest office and fourth-largest engineering center in the U.S., with 300-plus employees in three buildings.

"We have the best weather of any office in Google," said Thomas Williams, the engineering director who heads the office. "It's pretty easy to hire engineers from Toronto, New York, Cambridge, the best schools, all over the world."

c) What’s a perk?
large area of land preserved in its natural state as public property; "there are laws that protect the wildlife in this park"
a piece of open land for recreational use in an urban area; "they went for a walk in the park"

How to Flunk a Class

a) No one is perfect. Name some of the items that you read in the article that you know you do.
Always arrive late.
Never slip into your desk quietly. Instead, make a big production of slamming the door behind you, shouting out, "Sorry, I'm late! I had to go to the john!" If at all possible, drop your books on the floor or on your desk, too.
Better yet, don't have your books with you.
Never bring a pencil to class. Always borrow someone's and forget to bring it back.
Never bring paper. Let other people spend their money on stuff like that. Use their paper.

b) In what class do you apply these behaviors the least and what class do you apply these behaviors the most? In what ways to you try harder in one class more than another? Why do you think that is?
Use the paper you borrow to write a note. After you finish, make a big deal about passing - or better yet, "throwing" it across the room to someone else. Disturb as many as possible.
Never, ever, do your homework. The teacher will admire you for your consistency.
Loose your textbook the first week of school. Then you will have an excuse for not reading your assignments.
During class, doodle on your blue jeans with a pen.
Draw as much attention to yourself as possible. Make funny remarks. Be loud. Start arguments.
Groan a lot.
Fight with the Teachers

Say, "This is BORING!" loudly every five minutes or so, especially if it is really quiet in the room.

Ask, "Why do we have to do this stuff?" as often as possible.

After the teacher says, "Turn to page 36", say, "What page?"

When your group or partner is depending on you, show up unprepared. Better yet, don't show up at all.

Turn in all of your assignments late. Better yet, never turn them in at all.

If you absolutely can't talk to your neighbor, stare out the window or draw airplanes on top of the desk.

When you get your test back with an "F', shout, "This isn't fair! The teacher hates me!"

Never show concern about your grade until the last day of the grading period. Then see if the teacher has extra credit you can do to make up for all 42 missing assignments.

If the teacher says "NO", throw a fit.

Torment the girl who sits in front of you. Bang your knees against the back of the chair. Show her how you can make obnoxious noises with your hand in your armpit.

Torment the boy that sits behind you. Steal his pencil. Jiggle his desk when he is trying to write.
Stay up as late as possible. Sleep in class.
If you have to read something in class, make it a magazine or a comic book.
Always chew gum, loudly. Bubblegum works best as you can blow a big bubble and have it pop all over your face.
If you have a report, copy word-for-word from the 'World Book Encyclopedia'.
If you decide to hand in some homework, make sure you have copied it from someone else in c

c) Over the next three weeks, what two behaviors from the list can you try to change or get better at in getting ready for midterms.
If you decide to do some homework for fifth period English, be sure you do it during fourth period math.

Don't take notes. If you have followed items #4 and #5, this should not be a problem.

How To Study?

Blogger: How to Study?

Copy the following questions into Blogger.

a. What did you think of the information? Did you think that college students face the same issues as high school students?

b. Do you study in chunks (parts) of time?

c. What is a good chunk\section of amount of time that you can to study at one time without taking a break? 20 minutes? 30 minutes? 60 minutes?

d. What are the 2 classes you need to focus on. How can you give them more effort?

1. Everyone is different, and for some students, studying and being motivated to learn comes naturally. If you are reading this page, it's likely that you are not one of them, but don't despair, there is hope! Your success in high school and college is dependent on your ability to study effectively and efficiently. The results of poor study skills are wasted time, frustration, and low or failing grades. It's your life, your time, and your future. All I can say, upon reflection of many years as a student, is that time is precious and not to be squandered, no matter what you believe right now.
they are face some problem some students are face problem are math because it hard and diffirent than Effective study skills must be practiced in order for you to improve. It is not enough to simply "think about" studying; you have to actually do it, and in the process use information from what you do to get better. This is the central idea of this page. All that follows depends on this single concept. There is a saying that goes like this: "Practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect." If you want to be an achiever, take this saying to heart.8th grade.
2.No two people study the same way, and there is little doubt that what works for one person may not work for another. However, there are some general techniques that seem to produce good results. No one would argue that every subject that you have to take is going to be so interesting that studying it is not work but pleasure. We can only wish.
3.Effective study skills must be practiced in order for you to improve. It is not enough to simply "think about" studying; you have to actually do it, and in the process use information from what you do to get better. This is the central idea of this page. All that follows depends on this single concept. Before you even begin to think about the process of studying, you must develop a schedule. If you don't have a schedule or plan for studying, then you will not have any way of allocating your valuable time when the unexpected comes up. A good, well thought out schedule can be a lifesaver. It's up to you to learn how develop a schedule that meets your needs, revise it if necessary, and most important, follow it.
